How To Keep Your Storage Rental Clean

How can you keep your storage unit clean? Whether this is your first experience with a rental or the unit is cluttered, dusty, and dirty, take a look at the top self-storage cleaning tips to follow.

Remove Some Items

Cut the clutter and clear your rental unit. The less stuff you store, the easier it is to keep the area clean. It's easy to overfill a rental. You may have items at home that you think you could possibly use again. But you don't necessarily need these picks every day, week, or month. Instead of selling, donating, recycling, or throwing out rarely used items, you box them up and put them into your self-storage rental.

If you've already created a storage inventory, review the list, and look for anything you could remove. Along with items you can't or won't use again, you can also remove belongings you may need at home again. These could include children's toys or clothes, seasonal clothing for the rest of the family, furniture you can rotate back into a new design or decor plan, or holiday decorations.

Sweep the Rental

Even though a rental unit doesn't get the same type of foot traffic your home does, the floor can still pick up plenty of debris. Every time you go into the rental or move something new in, you track dirt, dust, mud, and muck into the unit.

Sweep your rental regularly. If you can't get to some of the dirt or debris, use a handheld vacuum or an upright vacuum with a long nozzle attachment. If possible, move boxes, bins, bags, or furniture to sweep or vacuum the entire space.

Dust Your Items

The floor isn't the only part of the rental unit you need to clean regularly. Dust and debris can accumulate on top of boxes, bins, or furniture. Dust these items with a towel or microfiber cloth.

Avoid Wet Cleaning Methods

Provided you don't bring food or beverages into the unit, it's not likely that you'll spill something onto the items you store. This means you won't need to clean containers, furniture, or anything else with soap and water. A water-based cleaning method may remove stuck-on debris and stop stains, but it can also leave behind moisture.

Moisture in a self-storage unit can support mold growth. Not only can this ruin your belongings, but it can also cause an odor. If you need to wash anything with water, take it out of the unit, and clean it at home. When the item is completely dry, you can bring it back to the rental.
